4 drives raid 5. Raid 6 was introduced when the first 1tb hdds first came out to address the risk of a possible second disk failure in a parity based raid like raid 4 or raid 5. However if a drive in a raid 5 systems dies and is replaced by a new drive it takes hours or even more than a day to rebuild the swapped drive. Raid 10 with 4 drives is going to have a major increase in performance over a raid 5.

Raid 6 minimum of 4 disks is similar to raid 5 but raid 6 arrays include two independent parity datasets instead of one that is striped separately across all disks in the array. Number of drives required for raid 5 group 4x300gb drives 31 total usable capacity 900gb. Apr 7 2011 2 yes.

Raid 5 requires at least three disks. Unlike in raid 4 parity information is distributed among the drives. Better to use.

Thats the point behind raid5. The chances that two drives break down at exactly the same moment are of course very small. That means it requires at least 4 drives and can withstand 2 drives dying simultaneously.

Raid 5 consists of block level striping with distributed parity. Raid 6 can withstand the failure of two drives at once and this property makes the array as resilient as possible. Sep 22 2009 219 0 18710 11.

The storage bits take the attraction of raid 5 is that it gives you 3 drives worth of capacity on a 4 drive array but at the cost of having to use backups if an ure is encountered. Even raid 6 might be considered. Upon failure of a single drive subsequent reads can be calculated from the distributed parity such that no data is lost.

If i have a raid 5 setup with 4 drives and 1 drive fails the array would remain functional with just a performance drop. But today the 4tb hdds could be the l ast straw that will break the camels back or in this case raids back.
